At minimum, require proof of general liability insurance (at least $1 million) and workers' compensation coverage. If a worker is injured in your home and the contractor does not carry workers' comp, you could be held liable. A professional flooring contractor will provide a written estimate that breaks down every cost: materials, labor, subfloor preparation, demolition and haul-off, transitions and trim, and any additional charges. If a contractor gives you a single number with no breakdown, walk away.

The estimate should also specify the exact product being installed — brand, model, color, and plank dimensions. Vague descriptions like "luxury vinyl plank" or "engineered hardwood" are not sufficient. You need to know exactly what you are paying for so you can verify the pricing is fair.
